Fitila

I wrote this poem for a friend on the demise of the father. My heart goes out to all who’ve lost their earthly fathers. This is to say to you: God is the everlasting father,  may you walk in His light and find life.
P. S.  Each line of Yoruba is transliterated to English in the next line and italicized (for non Yoruba speakers).

“FITILA”
FOR A.Y (THE BIG BAMZ HIMSELF)
Eniyan lo n sore eniyan
Only humans befriend humans
Ore eni lore eni
One’s friend is one’s friend
Ayobami lore temi
Ayobami is my friend
Baba ore mi ku
My friend’s father passed away
Baba ore mi ku
My friend’s father remains
Digi ore mi fo
My friend’s mirror is broken
Digi ore mi ku
My friend’s mirror is intact
Fitila ku
The lamp has gone out
Fitila ku
The lamp shines still
Oba oke ni digi ti kii fo
God is the everlasting mirror
Oba oke ni fitila tii kii ku
God is the lamp that never goes out
The everlasting mirror is with you
May you look into Him and find your dreams
The eternal lamp is your guide
May you look by His light and find your way
A dara
All shall be well.
