FOR THE SOULS WE LOST

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jet targeting Boko Haram members, on the 17th of January 2017 killed scores and injured many more after firing into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Rann, Kala/Bage Local Government Area in the northern part of Borno State. The Army has described this as a regrettable mistake. I write this for the lost souls…

FOR THE SOULS WE LOST

If we burnt down a house
We could construct another
If we tore a certificate
We could print another
If we lost a document
We could swear an affidavit
But how do we bring back the lost souls?

Mistake hath no master
But why so many servants?

If we smashed a car
We could buy another
If we sunk a ship
We could build another
If we crashed a plane
We could assemble another
But how do we bring back the lost souls?

Mistake hath no master
But why so many servants?

If this be everyday life
We’d reduce it to manslaughter
If this be warfare
We’d try for war crimes
If this be a dream
We’d wake up and avert it
But how do we bring back the lost souls?

Mistake hath no master
But why so many servants?

We may cry or laugh
Deny or admit
Compensate or hold back
But naught can bring back the lost souls

Mistake hath no master
But why so many servants?
